Episode 116: McCord Henry

Nine years after getting sober, McCord Henry is discovering that recovery doesn’t end with sobriety.

When McCord first joined me on At the Podium, he spoke about his nearly life-ending addiction to alcohol, the moment that finally forced him to stop drinking, and a philosophy he called “Living Recovered.” In this return conversation, that philosophy has evolved. For McCord recovery now means looking beyond alcohol and examining the other ways he searches for affirmation, intimacy, achievement, certainty, and the other person he hopes will finally make him feel complete.

McCord talks candidly about stepping away from dating apps and casual intimacy, learning to be still, rebuilding trust in himself, and reconsidering the faith that once wounded him – not as a return to the faith of his childhood, but as a personal journey that he rediscovers for himself.

He also shares the story behind ScriptedWit, his daily practice of sharing handwritten words of encouragement, and the enduring legacy of his grandmother Mimi, who taught him that in life, as in music, the rests are as important as the notes.

This is a conversation about addiction, faith, self-worth, love, stillness, and the humility to recognize that becoming never really ends. Perhaps being recovered was never about arriving. Perhaps it is about remaining open enough to keep reimagining and embracing the various seasons of our lives and who we are meant to be.
